Rob Warner Meets Downhill World Champion Loïc Bruni

Rob Warner tracks down Loïc Bruni in Andorra. Loïc has won 4 of the last 5 Downhill World Championships.

Bruni and Rob start off by pedal through Loïc’s stellar career, from his first World Cup win in 2016, through the injury-strewn years of ’17 and ’18 and on to 2019 when Loic won both the World Cup and World Championships, which made him the first rider in over a decade to hold both titles in the same year. In Rob’s words, “he has the ability to rise to the occasion like no other rider in the modern era.”

Bruni also reveals how having a mental coach has been key to his success both on and off the track: “I try to have everything settled all the time,” he explains,  “so when I get to the race I only think about riding fast.”

Later in episode Rob also meets Loïc’s girlfriend, professional cross country rider Malena Degn, in Barcelona, to dig deeper into his success. According to Rob, Loïc admits that “he wouldn’t  be so successful without her in his life.” While Malena says that it is his “ability to really put the focus in when it counts” that makes him so damn good.

Loïc and Rob discuss the 2019 race season, “the best mountain bike World Cup season there’s ever been,” according to Rob. “You never in my eyes looked better than this,” Rob says of Loïc’s UCI win in Maribor before unpicking the rivalry and friendship between Loïc and Amaury Pierron which defines the year’s momentus struggle for the overall title.

“I always ride in my comfort zone even in a race run,” says Loïc. So to push Loïc and close out the show Rob surprises him with a day out riding snowy trials with 27x trials motorcycle champion, Toni Bou.
